Chancellor, You Deserve a Break Today!!!

Last night, you were a star.  Last night, the folks showed what they were made of: dignity and respectful.  The tough questions didn’t get asked but that’s ok.  Where in the world has that leadership been for the last 2 years!!!

Now, we’ll be back tomorrow but today is yours.

  1. In my humble opinion, last night was the same old speech that has been scripted and recycled during the last few months. No substantive questions were answered and those that were important, were dodged. I do have a recommendation for Ms. Young, when speaking to the press be careful what you say because it can come back to bite you. Your interview with Channel 14 was inconsistent with the Chancellors statements about the blog. See, trying to dismiss this blog as irrelevant is a big mistake. This blog brought the media and has focused the attention on the “real issues”, the dishonesty and unethical behavior that is the staple of Reaves administration.

Did you know that the state has a hot line, and you remain anonymous. Did you know that the internal auditor gets information and the person remains anonymous? Did you know that Legal Affairs has also a phone number to call and callers should remain anonymous? However, all the reporting that has been done through these legal means has not beeen effective Why? Because you cannot serve two masters. Using that same principle, the bloggers that have posted will remain anonymous in order to protect them. Why, very simple Nancy, R_E_T_A_L_I_A_T_I_O_N. Another staple of the Reaves regime.

I know that reporters are following this blog and rightfully so. Why? Because it rises above gossip and defamation. This blog only posts information thatis verifiable. My recommendation to the newscasters and reporters, by the way Channel 14 you got a bulls eye; you deserve and GOTH (Got it on the head) Award, is the following:

Let me give you guys a heads up:

Why is Chico coming back? Because he was wrongfully terminated. The trump charges could not stick. Very much like two other staff personnel that were wrongfully terminated last year and came back. Why? Check the deposition, who lied under oath? Inquiring minds would like to know? When someone lies under oath, that person cannot be trusted. Lies, lies and lies. A character flaw that is the downfall of many university presidents.

My personal recommendation to you Nancy is that you need to be camera friendly. Do not dress like you just got it from Goodwill, go to the Mall. And don’t be surprised to stumble at the Food Court, all those folks from the third floor who have 2-3 hour lunch breaks at Hanes Mall. The rest of us need to struggle with our
    $30,000 salaries despite our degrees.

    • Despite common beliefs the “Third Floor” works very hard, and yes most are only at or around your “$30,000” salary, With out the work flow from the “Third Floor”, there would be no one to promote the University and a variety of other services.

      Thanks….have a nice day 🙂

  2. The major issues with Donald have not been brought out on this Blog.

    1. His personality is not a good fit with WSSU. This HBCU is still one that demands diginigy, honest, and respect for all people. Reaves curses employees at will. He has been known to walk by janitors and yard employees and not speak. He has asked the provosts to fire an individual in administration stating that she is to old. Reaves could never acheive what this women has acheived even if he had another one hundred years to do so. He is demanding and arogrant and makes terrible comments about HBCUs, Winston Salem and WSSU. He once said in a BOT meeting that people from this University could not get jobs at another university in this world. I guess he has not looked at the accomplishments of the university, especially under the Martin administration.

    2. He has shown no respect for state laws nor Central Administration policies or guidelines.
He employed Darcous Colvin, Gerald Hunter, Ivan Foster, Brown (facilities) Brenda Allen through processes that did not even resemble the university process. All of these individuals are friends of his or his wife. His search committies were each led by Colvin and a friend who he hird as consultant or his good friend Dr Shah and Shah’s sidekick, Dr. Aileru. In each case Reaves selected the weakess candidate and the one that he wanted to be interviewed. Records will show that Donald J. Reaves visited Providence on several occasion to meet with Brenda Allen during the search process. That is a violation of Equal Opportunities policies. The records for this search will show that all canidates were more qualified than her.

    3. Division 1. From the beginning of his tenue he did not want to make this move. Mainly because he did not want anything that Dr. Harold Martin started to succeed. He has been here for two years and has had ample time to raise money, oversee the budget in the area athletics, lead the self-study process to move to division I or MAKE THE MOVE BACK TO DIVISION II. What has he done? Nothing except tried to cause confusion among alumni. It will cost us just as much in time and money to go back. It is costing much while we are waiting on his decision.

    4. Retention. If you are going to be Chancellor instead of Vice Chancellor of an institution you have to be able to do more tham one thing at the time. Retention of students should not stop the chancellor form working on the business infrastructure problem, the DI problem, the space problem, the fundraising problem, the budget problem and more. If Donald can’t do anything but work on retention then he should seek a student affairs vice chancellor position.

    5. Budget? THIS IS WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD. President Boles brought Reaves to this campus to correct the budget infrastructure and to rasie private money for the university. He has not raised any money. The infrastructure with Gerald Hunter at the head is in worst shape than its been in 30 years. It takes between 3 to 4 weeks to get a requisition through the process. In fact the budget is worse because of Donald Reaves. Example, Dr. Caldwell was fired after Reaves had given him a unbeleivable raise and a contract for six years. Reaves goes into a rage and fire Caldwell without considering laws, state policies and now the university will pay Caldwell for the rest of the contract. Money that could have been used. Reaves hired Nancy Young $89,000 to improve his image. What? She was employed as a part time person. Againist state laws and state policies he order HR to give her full benifits. He spends money on parties and yes tablecloths and employing people for his benifit. He, Gerald and Jessica Bailey have caused the faculty and staff to lose countless hours in redoing and trying to make them understand.

    6. Academics. He has said publicly that research in not important and brings nothing to the university. He said that he would not support SACS. But most of all he denied Tenure for some faculty who qualified because as he put it, the number of years at the institution were not sufficient. He admitted in a faculty meeting that he did not look at their applications. This sudden criteria was not at that time a part of the criteria. He then asked a committee to place that requirement in the criteria.

    7. The RIF plan. Is it his plan to tell people on June 30th that they are not to come back? All other schools in the system have told those who will be let go. He has no feeling about how these people will make a future living. If they had been told when the plan was made at leadt they could have been preparing. What will people do when they will have have no paycheck or plans to live?

President Boles please take care of this matter. He is causing trouble in this community and this University. Remember he went to the media not the Alumni nor the faculty or students. The media is now fair game. Please help.

  3. You are right, the tough questions did not get asked last night. For example, why are the alumni more upset about athletics than the 13% graduation rate? Not even cutting the program, just moving to the conference you were recently in versus the overwhelming large number of students not graduating. Why does the alumni association and booster club not understand the difference between hard and soft money? Fundraising = soft money (varies)
student fees = hard money (funds you can depend on for revenue)
Why do the alumni think they can start a grass roots effort to raise $3 million every year when they do not donate money now? Why would any alumni, of any educational institution, want the athletic program to be better than the academic program? Why, in the heat of an important forum on school issues, do we think it’s cute for the class of ’70 football team to stand up and relive their glory days? We might as well done like every other major black event and held a step show in the middle as well.

The chancellor could cut the homecoming budget; (is young Jeezy required for aumni/students who: (1) don’t give back; (2) likely won’t graduate – the proof is In the stats; and (3) need the money to go to better academics and students services) but, taking away funding from homecoming would lead to an uprising unlike any we have ever seen.

You claim the crowd acted with dignity and respect. They appeared aloof, foolish, and ignorant. Your dignified and respectful crowd are the same group that actually advocated for raising $3 million to allow the football team to stay in the MEAC. When Reaves questioned the wisdom of raising the money for athletics over academics (knowing the low graduation rate) the crowd pretended like Reaves never posed the question.

But, you are more concerned with graduation speakers whom you liked and table cloths that you did not have the nerve to complain about while you were eating off of them.

And, as in most cases, the most ignorant in the group are the loudest. That was definitely the case at the forum.

  4. Nigel, when you found out that $ 34,382.00 of bartender fees and alohol were charged to the chancellor’s office why didn’t you take this matter to your board? This audit never was put on your board meeting agenda. Why?

President Bowles, everything is a cover up in the WSSU administration. When are you going to stop this (deleted) style of administration?

  5. Dear Deacon1 don’t fool yourself we know that you are VJ and CJ and you have found a new outlet for your frustrations at the Chancellor’s house. You are alumnus of this great university and yet you preach such vile words against your Alma Mata and schoolmates. What have you given back?

CJ you know that the graduation rate has always been low, in fact it was your charge to fix it when you were making your living here at the University. But you couldn’t fix it. If you had, Reaves would have found something else to divert attention. You were always one to want to take it from the students. I guess you are saying that it would be ok to drain the DI money from students since it is hard money. You always were on the wrong side of trouble.

A 13% graduation rate means that 77% of students starting in a cohart did not graduate in 4 years. It does not mean those students did not graduate. WSSU graduates large numbers of students each year. After two years at the University, what have you done about this? Dr. Reaves? The University College was started under Harold Martin. You just keep adding positions to it. Is it working? I do remember at your inauguation you continued to emphasize “you had inherited many problems” and you are still crying the blues. Welcome to a chancellorship at a state HBCU.

If Reaves and all of you “tablecloth people” would stop spending money on non-educational activity we could fund education and the MEAC. If Reaves would stop hiring these high price ignorant administrators we could fund education and membership in the MEAC. If Reaves knew the art of fundrasing we could fund education and membership in the MEAC. If Reaves had accepted this community rather than trying to make the community accept him, we could raise money to fund both education and membership in the MEAC. If Reaves could do what he promised President Bowles and stop the loss of operational, salary, and supply funds while faculty and staff try to traverse the fiscal processes we could fund education and membership in the MEAC. If Reaves would stop Dalton-Rann form spending funds on her family and friends we could fund university activities…… If Reaves would supervise Gerald Hunter in his responsibilities(after all he was the CEO of a school in Ohio when it went under because of finance) we could fund education and membership in the MEAC. If Reaves would stop causing the University to pay legal fees and raparation to people he fires(illegally)or falsely has arrested we could fund education, MEAC and a salary for a well qualified Chancellor.

President Bowles, WSSU and the community deserves better than what you have given. Please correct your honest mistake.

    • “A 13% graduation rate means that 77% of students starting in a cohart (sic) did not graduate in 4 years. It does not mean those students did not graduate.”
What else does the number mean? With the majority of your students receiving financial aid, 77% of your students accumulate large student loan payments while graduating in the worst economy since the great depression (Obama’s description, not mine). According to statistics from the NC Institute of Minority Economic Development, the average annual Winston Salem State University student debt is $6,825 as a state university with the majority of students receiving instate tuition compared to $6,632 for the private university of Wake Forest (see http://www.ncimed.com). Campus wide debt of the similarly sized institutions is averaged at $5,527,542 at private Wake Forest versus $17,100,915 at public WSSU. And, it should be noted that these are averages. The actual gap is likely much greater.

These stats simply suggest that trying to justify your students’ poor matriculation through school makes you look foolish. You are missing the bigger picture of your students graduating with enormous student loan debt which is unnecessary at a state university and in this bad economy. Trying to act like everything is fine academically at WSSU and the real issues are table cloths and graduation speakers only ensures that businesses and “friends” will not want to invest in people with such misguided beliefs.

      • Deacon, you seem to be so informed about everything at WSSU, why haven’t you addressed the 2007 internal audit. We want to see what you have to say when it’s exposed top the public to show how their tax monies were used.

  6. If the graduation rate is 13% then that means that
87% aren’t graduating, not 77%. I am in favor of
    shaking WSSU up actually.

  7. I am responding to Deacon1.

The link below is where Deacon1 extracted this data.

Response: Of the 17, campus the student debt range from $5,517(Elizebeth State University) to $7,498 UNC at Charlotte. Ten of the 17 school have student debt averages in the $6,000 range. Contrary to what Nancy would have you to beleive, WSSU (6,825)is no different in this respect.

Nancy, why you would compare us with WFU is beyond reason. However this is the bases of the problems that Reaves has caused at this University. Donald does not understand that there is a defference in a private school with a hugh endownemt and a state supported institution. The people in his camp do not understand that . Do you not know that debt after graduation is better than NO DEGREE, JAIL, DEATH, OR A DEAD END JOB. The people in Donald’s Camp could care less about young people of color in our community or state. Oh that’s right the people in Donald’s camp helds from Chicago, New york, Ohio, and Rhode Island.

Deacon1 wrote:”You are missing the bigger picture of your students graduating with enormous student loan debt which is unnecessary at a state university and in this bad economy.”

Response:Unnecessary??? What Ivory Tower did you drop in from. Read something on disparties in education. Do you by any chance know what causes student to “drop out” and “drop in”? Do you know anything about the socioeconomics of must students black and white that attend WSSU? Do you know about their life responsibilities? You would rather as Donald has done not admit students that you think will not graduate in 4 years.

“Trying to act like everything is fine academically at WSSU and the real issues are table cloths and graduation speakers only ensures that businesses and “friends” will not want to invest in people with such misguided beliefs.”

Response: You got that right. Very few have invested in WSSU doing the last two years as compared to the Dr. Martin years. So you are right very few people will invest in WSSU as long as Donald is at the helm with his “misguided beliefs.”

We do not advocate student debt. But before you open your mouth why don’t try to learn a little history.

WHAT HAS DONALD DONE FOR TWO YEARS AT THIS UNIVERSITY?

  8. Well WSSU made the YES Weekly. Here is the link

    http://npaper-wehaa.com/yes-weekly;see-8hjR5yAc0JkOJ635;c-367601
for an article that gets some input from both sides of the aisle. Longtime athletic boosters, former coaches and alumni Al Roseboro and Al Harvey are finally being heard. My question is this: Why didn’t the former AD and WSSU administration not get any feedback from these guys particularly since they have been part and parcel of the athletics program for many years?

The second question is: Why are most of the WSSU administration, alumni and others saying they can’t accomplish (get funding…it seems kind of defeatist and looking at the glass half empty instead of half full?

  9. WSSU WAKE UP!!!! Dr. Reaves is a blessing to our University….Stop hating on Change!!!

    • Yes, Reaves is a blessing. That is if you like disruption, dishonesty, Ernie Pitts, golf, liquor, cursing, incompentence, cheating, getting funding on the backs of student and their hard working parents, and being paid a salary for all of the above from the hard working people of North Carolina. How lucky can we be?

And by the way Wise Council (also Deacon1), “we the people” are who brought WSSU to were it was before Don Reaves; embrace change! We disapprove, however, of helter-skelter “because I Am The Boss”, Change. Makes you wonder how on earth we made it before Reaves.

  10. It is not change that we hate. We hate the way Reaves has DESTROYED the good works of other chancellors and preisdents who have gone before him.

  11. Donald, I understand you have made a decision on the emplyees(50)that you will let go at the end of June.Your rationle is you are getting rid of the low performers. I hope you included yourself into that group.I hope you have consulted with your EEOC officer because if you haven’t you can expect law suites to be flying all over the place.

  12. Donald you have made a decision on the employees that you well let go at the end of June, 2009 (50). You are calling them low performers. I hope you have included your self in this group.

  13. as a carpenter would say i think you should start with yourself and work down.

  14. Donald it is time that you told the truth about layoffs? Are you planning to give pink slips June 30th? Non productive, wasted funds, and not trust worthy, that is you. How can you decide who is noproductive? You are not on campus enough to know who is producing.

  15. Donald, to get RaVonda out of your office and off the third floor of Blair Hall, what Vice Chancellor or Deanship position are you going to create for her?
